This art centre was initially designed to house under the one roof the collection of Robert and Lisa Sainsbury, a temporary exhibition space, a café, an art and museology school, a restaurant, a library, the university's collection of abstract and constructivist art, work spaces, etc. The architect's innovative approach of which this was one of the first great projects, resulted in a stunning design for this type of building: an immense open space notable for its transparency and the interplay of natural and artificial light. The structure is comprised of a series of steel tube lattice portals with a 35-metre span. Plant and service premises are integrated into the structure's thickness between the external cladding and the interior shutters.

In diesem Kunstzentrum sollten ursprünglich die Sammlungen von Robert und Lisa Sainsbury untergebracht werden, es sollte Räumlichkeiten für Wanderausstellungen bieten, ein Café, eine Kunst- und Musikschule, ein Restaurant, eine Bibliothek, eine Sammlung abstrakter und konstruktivistischer Kunst der Universität sowie Arbeitsräume, usw. beherbergen. Die Struktur besteht aus einer Reihe von Fachwerk-Portalrahmen und Stahlrohren mit einer Tragweite von 35 m. Pflanzen und Diensträume finden Platz in der Struktur, zwischen Fassadenverkleidung und inneren Klappfensterläden.

Ce centre d'art a été conçu initialement pour accueillir sous un même toit la collection de Robert et Lisa Sainsbury, un espace d'exposition temporaire, un café, une école d'art et de muséologie, un restaurant, une bibliothèque, la collection d'art abstrait et constructiviste de l'université, des espaces de travail, etc. L'approche innovante de l'architecte dont ce fut l'une des premières grandes réalisations, s'est traduite par une conception étonnante pour ce type de bâtiment : un immense espace ouvert caractérisé par sa transparence et le jeu complémentaire des lumières naturelle et artificielle. La structure est constituée d'une série de portiques en treillis de tubes en acier de 35 m de portée. Plantes et locaux de services sont compris dans l'épaisseur de la structure, entre le bardage extérieur et les volets intérieurs.

Este centro de arte fue diseñado originalmente para albergar bajo un mismo techo la colección de Robert y Lisa Sainsbury, un espacio para exposiciones temporales, una cafetería, una escuela de arte y museología, un restaurante, una biblioteca, la colección de arte abstracto y constructivista de la universidad, espacios de trabajo, etc. El enfoque innovador del arquitecto, de quien constituyó el primer gran proyecto, dio como resultado un diseño sorprendente para este tipo de edificios: un inmenso espacio abierto que destaca por su transparencia y por la interacción de la luz natural y artificial. La estructura consta de una serie de pórticos en celosía de tubos de acero con un tramo de 35 m. Las plantas y las instalaciones de mantenimiento están integradas en el grosor de la estructura, entre el revestimiento exterior y los postigos interiores.
