Natural forms are a part of the architectural concept of the architect, with which he creates stunning, atmospheric spaces. The roof over the courtyard of the university institute is raised up like the spine of a reptile and follows an ellipse in plan. A hydraulically operated shading system controls daylight. As a result, this technical system itself becomes an expressive, moving spatial element. The project is an outstanding and very effective example for the malleability and expressiveness of steel in architecture.

Die Formen der Natur gehören zum gestalterischen Leitgedanken des Architekten, mit denen er verblüffende, atmosphärische Räume schafft. Die Überdachung des Innenhofes des universitären Institutes ist wie das Rückgrat eines Reptils aufgeworfen und folgt im Grundriss einer Ellipse. Eine hydraulisch gesteuerte Beschattungsanlage kontrolliert das einfallende Sonnenlicht. So wird diese technische Anlage selbst zu einem expressiven, lebendigen Raumelement. Das Projekt ist ein hervorragendes und sehr wirkungsvolles Beispiel für die Formbarkeit und Ausdrucksstärke von Stahl in der Architektur.

L'architecte Calatrava s'inspire principalement des formes de la nature, avec lesquelles il crée des espaces d'une atmosphère extraordinaire. La couverture de la cour intérieure de l'institut universitaire adopte ainsi la géométrie d'un renflement, à l'image de l'épine dorsale d'un reptile, tout en suivant, dans le plan horizontal, celle d'une ellipse.
