The basic requirement for the design of the bridge was a navigational clearance of 7,80 m by 155 m.
To reduce the risk of ship impact even further, piers in the Rhine River were avoided. This arch bridge without any piers in the water represents an innovation for a footbridge across the Rhine River.
The steel arch bridge has a total length of 248 m and a main span of 229,40 m, the world’s largest for pedestrian bridges.

ECCS Awards for steel bridges Jury comments: The slenderness, elegance and carefully designed details of this quite large footbridge spanning a river between three countries perfectly illustrate the raison d'être of a bridge: to link people. The steel construction demonstrates the capabilities of steel both in term of technical performance and architectural signification.
