This unique centre devoted to a journey through world climates alongside the meridian running at 8° east affects the shape of an inflatable raft alongside the North Sea. The exhibition rooms located above a parking slab interlocks in vertical as well as horizontal projections with large pillar-free areas thanks to the steel structure with cellular beams. The enclosure is defined by a series of steel curved ribs supporting printed multilayer glass panes. The smooth exterior aspect sharply contrasts with the complexity of the interior, enhancing the surprise and experience for the visitors.

Within the framework of a concept implemented to compensate the loss of ecomonic pillars, shipbuilding and fishery, by promoting activities aimed at developping tourism and culture, some exceptional projects have recently been realized in Bremerhaven.

The Klimahaus® is the central attraction of the area Alter/Neuer Hafen in Bremerhaven which will be rounded off by the shopping mall “Mediterraneo” and the high-rise hotel “Sail City”. Project members have been working on this rejuvenation already since the first idea was born in 2000. Finally, on june 2009 the Klimahaus® opened its doors to the public after many years of planning and development.
Everybody is talking about weather. However, which factors influence the weather? Since June 2009 onwards the Klimahaus® Bremerhaven 8°Ost gives scientific well-founded and fascinating answers. For the first time a leisure time facility in Germany gives access to this highly-active scientific topic by illustrating it on a high level of quality in an easily understandable way.
Yet, the demanding construction form of the organic building of the Klimahaus® is a technical challenge. Not only the 9,000 qm exhibition area that needs to make the different climes tangible, also exhibits such as the big aquariums and the 5,000 visitors daily have special demands on climatisation and ventilation.
"Klimahaus 8° Ost" is the possibility to make a journey on the 8th degree of longitude through Erth different climatic zones. In the different rooms (stations) the temperature varies from 2°C (Antartica) to 28°C (Samoa).

The Klimahaus was erected on top of an underground parking. The massive internal supporting structure is the core of the Klimahaus. The parking's ceiling slabs and stairwells stabilise the building. The exhibition rooms are located above ground between +5.00m and 25.00m on floors that interlock horizontaly and verticaly.
The structural steelwork weighting a total of 2,700 tons is characterised by the main assemblies, i.e. the roof supporting framework and the façade.
The roof supporting framework weighting 1,350 tons consists of:
- welded primary and secondary beams,
- bent ACB beams,
- rolled sections,
- roofing bonds, tension members and pressure tubes,
- purlins made of HEA-120.
In the central area of the roof beams, up to 1.70m high, have a span of 34m and a camber up to 1.05m.
