The Berlin-Brandenburg region currently has three airports: the fast-growing airport Schönefeld southeast of Berlin and the downtown airports Tegel and Tempelhof. The future lies in Schönefeld. The former Central Airport of the GDR is being expanded to become Airport Berlin Brandenburg International BBI. The downtown airports in Tegel and Tempelhof will then be closed. With BBI, the capital city region will offer business travelers, tourists and companies a high-tech airport with great connections, with international flights, its own freeway connection and an train station right below the terminal. The Airport-Shuttle will take 20 minutes for the 20-kilometer long route to downtown Berlin.

The planned new major Berlin Airport - designed together with gmp architects' and IGK IGR partnership will be an airport of the new generation - cost-effective, functional, clear lines and short walking routes, blending into the functional urban surroundings with enough space for extensions and alterations while still forming a visual whole. The backbone of the entire complex is a central axis running between the two parallel runways centred on the terminal. All secondary buildings in the Airport City buildings are organizationally connected to the terminal and match the terminal in shape and height, thus ensuring a visual impression of quality.
The main terminal with the projecting concourse is split into two main levels separating arrivals and departures both landside and airside. The building has been designed as a generously proportioned, well-lit hall covered by a filigree steel-and-glass roof structure.
