This document is the 5th Edition of the ECCS European Recommendations
for the Buckling of Steel Shells. It is the successor to the 4th Edition,
published in 1988, which was very different in style, format and content,
though some of the regulatory requirements of the 4th Edition are here
retained in the 5th Edition. In the 20 years since the publication of
the 4th Edition in 1988, much has changed in the field of metal shell
buckling. Extensive research has been undertaken, much new knowledge
has been developed, and powerful computational modelling has transformed
the field, though much design is still conducted by hand calculation.
These changes are reflected in this 5th Edition.
The 5th Edition quotes extensively from the Eurocode EN 1993-1-6 (2007)
and is completely compatible with that standard.
However, the Eurocode has no commentary, so the meaning, limitations
and origins of many rules are not always clear. This 5th Edition provides
an extensive commentary on the existing rules relating to buckling in
the Eurocode, but extends far beyond it in giving recommendations, expansions,
advice and warnings, explanations and examples, all of which should
give the user< considerably more insight and confidence in applying
the rules of EN 1993-1-6.
Structure of the document This 5th Edition is divided into two parts.
Part I sets out the basic information and general procedures required
to undertake all shell buckling calculations according to EN 1993-1-6.
It describes the methodology and conceptual principles for numerical
analysis, either to derive the basic data that can be used in a straightforward
buckling design by hand calculation, or to replace parts of this calculation
with numerical assessments, or to carry out a buckling design that is
completely based on numerical assessment.
Part II sets out the detailed information for hand calculation procedures
when a shell of a particular geometry is being designed for a particular
loading condition. Many well-proven engineering formulas, empirical
data and simplified rules extracted from numerical parametric studies
have been included in this part. In particular, Part II contains radically
updated versions of the rules set out in the 4th Edition of the ECCS
Recommendations.
N° 119 : Rules for Member Stability in EN 1993-1-1: Background
documentation and design guidelines
English, 2006, 257pp
This volume intends at helping in the understanding of the new design
rules for member stability in Eurocode 3 Part 1.1 (EN 1993-1-1:2005).
In particular, the new recommendations for lateral torsional buckling
and beam-column stability in chapter 6.3.3 (4) of Eurocode 3 are concerned.
It is divided into two independent parts A and B.
Part A, devoted to the background of the proposed formulae, gives further
information on the way the formulae have been built and validated. Moreover,
the different basic concepts used in the formulae are detailed, for
the two sets of formulae proposed in the code. It is to be noted that
a great number of papers prepared within the development of the formulae
are made available by means of a CD-Rom that is part of this publication.
Part B is dedicated to practitioners; it contains fully detailed worked
examples on isolated members, from basic situations to the most complex
one. In addition, an example of design of a member extracted from a
frame is also given. Furthermore an annex shows especially the determination
of the elastic lateral torsional buckling moment for different loading
and support conditions.

N° 60 : European Recommendations for the Design of Longitunally
Stiffened Webs and of Stiffened Compression Flanges
English, July 1990, 43pp
In this book, Design Recommendations have been given for plate girders
with transverse stiffeners only, i.e. for the kind of girders mainly
used for building structures and also for bridges with limited spans.
The publication concerns usual plated structures with webs subject mainly
to in-plane bending and flanges subject to axial forces. It also serves
as a basis for the necessary complements of Eurocode 3 or for the corresponding
CEN-Committee respectively.

N° 36: Testing Procedures
English, 1984, 45 pp
This publication provides guidelines for testing procedures that are
in compliance with the design principles of the ECCS. It deals in particular
with the properties that are investigated experimentally in the course
or as goal of an ultimate strength determination rather than in the
viewpoint of material testing. The description of testing procedure
is restricted to strength parameters that influence the ultimate strength
of the test specimen.

N° 33: ULTIMATE LIMIT STATE CALCULATION OF SWAY FRAMES WITH RIGID
JOINTS
English, 1984, 26pp
The paper mainly deals with possible models for the static analysis
of frames and defines the range of application of these models. It shows
the possibility of different simplifications in the ultimate limit state
analysis of sway frames. The main application field is the analysis
of frames with I profiles bent about the strong axis. Elastic and elastic-plastic
analysis are examined.

N° 22 : Manual on Stability of Steel Structures
English, 1976, 333pp
Gives the theoretical and experimental basis for the relevant clauses
of the European Recommendations for Steel Construction and of the Model
Code for Composite Structures (see publications N°23, 28 and 29
of the present list).
The twelve chapters provide design criteria, literature and state-of-the-art
surveys of the relevant subjects.
