N° 24 : Tevfik Seno Arda School, Izmit, Turkey
A seismic resistant building in steel
The
building, the cost of which amounted to 1 200 000 euros, replaced a school
demolished in the 1999 earthquake. It was completed and opened for use
in September 2006 thanks to the financial and material donations of ECCS,
ArcelorMittal, Corus, thirty-two members of Turkish Structural Steel Association,
plus eighteen companies from Turkey.
The school, composed of sixteen classrooms, four laboratories, a computer
room, a library, a conference room and an administrative area, was constructed
around a central atrium.

23: Case Study - Quai Branly Museum Jean
Nouvel's museum extends along the quai Branly in all its complexity. This Noah's
ark with a steel skeleton of 3400 tonnes, measuring 220 metres in length and 40
metres in width comprises four main buildings: on the Seine side are the administrative
buildings and the rustling and humming landscape of its living façade of
vegetation (created by Patrick Blanc); on the rue de l'Université side
are the restoration workshops where ceilings are illuminated by aboriginal paintings.
The media library and museum nestle in the centre of the garden created by Gilles
Clément.

- ING Group Headquarters, Amsterdam The
use of steel construction was integral part of the architectural concept. Because
of the steel column structure the designers have succeeded in realizing the space
concept of the house; combining large and small scale spaces with different functions
to form a small city in the sky with transparent walls.

| n°20 - 50 years
of steel architecture in Europe Established
in 1955, the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork was one of the first
European institutions. The celebration of its 50th anniversary is an opportunity
to bring together for the first time a selection of one hundred projects built
over the past 50 years across Europe, presented in the form of an exhibition inaugurated
in Nice and in the present issue of Architecture Steel Stahl Acier. These buildings
and bridges built across Europe typify steel's role as one of the driving forces
behind architectural creativity. This diversity of forms illustrates the capacity
and quality of steel, the feats it enables, and demonstrates its ability to stand
the test of time while still remaining contemporary.

- Double-skin façades : Sanoma House, Baltic Sea Tower, Radiolinja
office building In
Finland, where the climatic conditions are severe, special attention has been
given to using double-skin façades for extensive glazed surfaces. In addition
the objective has been to maximize the amount of natural light in working environments.
At the end of 1990´s and at the beginnig of early 2000 several office buildings
with double façades were erected in the country.

- Town hall, Alphen aan den Rijn Alphen
aan den Rijn has experienced explosive growth over the past 20 years. Due to its
central location in the "Randstad" between Utrecht and Leyden as well
as to the fact that Alphen functions regionally as an urban growth centre, the
former village has now grown into a mature town of more than 70,000 inhabitants. One
of the most important architectural considerations for the town hall in Alphen
aan den Rijn was the desire to construct an exceptional building of high quality
and which stands out from the surrounding buildings through its appearance and
stature.

n°17 - Olympic Stadium, Istanbul Developed
as part of Turkey's bid to host the 2004 Olympic Games, the new Istanbul stadium
which provides a seating capacity of 80 000 including 50 000 under cover, forms
the focus for a sporting city in the making. Its two roofs, with their very different
forms, provide a distinctive asymmetry, and the lower terraces, sunk into the
ground, contrast with the elevated lands, which rise above the landscape. More
than just the sporting events or concerts, the stadium creates a whole new environment.

- TGV Stations With
the TGV as the main theme, the three new stations of the Mediterranean line are
unusual structures, created on green field sites. Each responds to specific constraints
and follows its own design logic: the interconnection of rail networks for Valence;
the climatic exposure for Avignon; the confrontation with the celebrated Sainte-Victoire
mountain for Aix-en-Provence. Each in its own way engages a dialogue with the
landscape and foreshadows a future development more caring for nature.

n°15 - House R 128 "...
a residential building erected today can be - and should be - absolutely emission-
free and capable of being powered solely by wind and/or solar energy. The building
must be fully recyclable which demands a method of construction that allows the
future separation of materials into single- material components. This in turn
entails new techniques of manufacture and assembly. The open design allows more
flexible arrangements of living spaces." Werner Sobek

- The Eden Project The
Eden project in Cornwall, UK, is the largest plant enclosure in the world, recreating
tropical and warm temperate habitats. The primary design objective was to create
the correct environment for growth using minimum water and energy. The key issues
were also orientation, natural lighting and heating, and maximum recycling of
water. The space frame form of the domes minimised the size and number of structural
elements. The required high transparency of the envelope was achieved using ETFE
(Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene) foil, capable of covering wide spans supported
by the most minimal of structures.

| n°11 - Service stations Houten, Orival, Hietalahi Service
stations are specific often independant structures, serving customers traveling
by car. As a structural materal, steel makes it possible to adapt these structures
to different surroundings from city centres to open countryside. The wide range
of steel products makes it possible to develop new kinds of environments as illustated
by Houten, Orivalaera and Helsinki-Hietalahi sevice stations.

Berlin The
design for the renovation of berlin Reichtag, the historic German parliament building
by Wallot from 1894, was the subject of an international competition won by Sir
Norman Foster. The winning scheme introduced radical changes, following the new
masterplan for the city prepared by Axel Schultes, to retain as much of Wallot's
original building as possible. The principal feature of Foster's revisited scheme
was the replacement of the original dome, largely cosmetic and badly damaged,
by a huge transparent hemisphere, with a central reflector directing natural lightinto
the building.

Terminal 2F, Roissy The
fifth terminal at Charles-de-Gaulle international airport, Paris, Roissy 2F marks
a new generation of this type of building reflecting changes in airline operation
and increasing numbers of passengers. Steel has proved itself well suited to the
design challenge, resulting in a building which is more holistic, more transparent,
and in a sense less important than the space it encloses.

- Turku academy of art Turku,
the former capital of Finland, has succeeded well in transforming an industrial
environment with several time layers into new, vibrant town space. The conversion
of the old rope factory and a shipbuilding shed of steel construction into an
art centre has contributed to a high-quality urban environment. The modern architectural
design, technology and steel construction have combined to create an imaginative
connection between the new development and the historical townscape.

is one of L'Oréal's largest manufacturing facilities for cosmetic and hair
care products. This site consists of three production units, control laboratories,
administration and social facilities. The client wanted a development which
would encourage productivity in a good working environment, and wich would promote
the firm's image. The complex also had to blend sensitively into the site
and at the same time provide a green central area, screened from its surroundings.

house, currently occupied by EFTA (the European Free Trade Association), is situated
at the corner of the rue Belliard and the rue de Trèves in the heart of
the business district of Brussels. It is quite different from the surrounding
buildings, which are mainly of reinforced concrete frame construction, with solid
façades of concrete, stone or aluminium. The steel framework and external
glass skin give the building an immediate impression of transparency and lightness.
