The European Convention for Constructional Steelwork has pleasure in
inviting entries for the 2010 European Steel Bridges Award.
The objective is to give European recognition to outstanding steel and
composite bridges emphasizing the many advantages of steel in construction,
production, economy and architecture in order to interest clients, architects
and engineers in using more steel within the entire building sector,
thereby making the steel industry more competitive.
A panel of judges comprising prominent representatives of Architecture and Civil Engineering will assess the entries:
The judging panel selects award winners after assessing all entrants against the following criteria:
The judging will take place in March/April and the Jury's decision will be known before 15th May 2010. The General Secretariat will inform the National Association members who have submitted an entry of the decision.
The winner in each category will receive a trophy and the nominees a certificate. The owner of the structures and the architects responsible for the design receive an Award as do the engineers and the steelwork contractors. The Award will be presented during the International Symposium on Steel Structures, Culture and Sustainability which will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, on 20th to 22nd September 2010 (more info on www.sscs2010.org)
The entire entry should be contained within one binder or a CD or a
DVD, and accompanied by an application form and a printed proof copy
of the content of the CD or DVD.
General descriptions and photographs of these projects may be used for
publications and articles in the press. Application for an European
Steel Bridge Award automatically means agreement that ECCS and/or the
full members of ECCS may use the material presented to ECCS for all
purposes relating to the aims of ECCS.
ECCS Steel Bridge Awards Ceremony will be held on 22 September 2010.
The Awards are open to steel works designed and produced in the ECCS
Full Member countries.
Only steel construction projects located in the Full Member Association
countries of ECCS are eligible.
The building construction must have been completed and be ready for
occupation or use within the last three years, not later than 31st May
in the award presentation year. Previous entries are not eligible.
Both new buildings or bridges and renovation (major retrofit, expansion
or rehabilitation) projects are eligible.

In
their European tour of investigation, the delegation of the China Steel
Construction Society (CSCS) stopped in Brussels and paid ECCS a visit
on 16 May.
The Chinese Steel Construction Society (CSCS), founded in 1984, is a
national professional body made of near 2000 group members, which are
organizations of design, research, manufacture, erection, iron and steel
works etc.
After the presentation of ECCS and CSCS, the Chairman of the PMB explained
the ECCS issues as for the steel promotion. Mr. Jean-Luc Delplancke
Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) expert was invited to attend
the meeting. He introduced to the Chinese team the RFCS and its implication
in the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP).
The Chinese delegation contemplated a membership to the ECCS as International
Member. The ECCS would be delighted to have the Chinese Association
among its members creating in this way, with the other Associated Members,
a kind of platform between Europe and the other continent.
The 2006 Charles Massonnet Award has been made to Professor Manfred
Hirt, from EPFL, Switzerland.
Professor Hirt is member of the following ECCS Technical Committees:
TC 2- Aluminium, TC 6-Fatigue & Fracture, TC 10-Connections. He
wrote more than 130 publications as author or co-author (http://icom.epfl.ch/puoblications/).
Director of the Steel Structures Laboratory (ICOM) of the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology at Lausanne (EPFL), Prof. Hirt is known on the
international scene for his expertise in the field of fatigue and fracture
mechanics of steel structures, loads and action on structures, structural
safety and serviceability and steel-concrete composite construction.
In August 2003, he had been elected President of the International Association
for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). Congratulations!
ECCS is pleased to announce thewinners of the 2005 European Steel Design
Awards, in recognition to outstanding design in steel constructions
emphasizing the many advantages of steel in construction, production,
economy and architecture. The awards are made to the projects which
best fitted the jury panel's criteria, i.e.
- To have an international recognised standard; .
- To disseminate the knowledge of steel and its many-sides uses and
to draw attention to its development
- To bring focus on the many advantages of steel, thereby giving the
material a good image
- To interest clients, architects and engineers in using more steel
within the entire building sector, thereby making the steel industry
competitive
- To be outstanding in its construction
- To emphasise the advantages of steel in construction, production,
economy and architecture
- To improve the image of steel. Among our 22 European National Associations,

Congratulations to the winners.
All the projects nominated for awards will be invited to make presentation
at the Award Ceremony to take place on Wednesday 21 September 2005,
at the Palais de la Méditerranée, as part
of the ECCS Annual Conference. The winners will, then, be presented
with their awards. The next issue of the ECCS Newsletter will report
on this event.
4th International Workshop Structures in Fire held on 10 to 12 May,
2006, in the University of Aveiro, Portugal
The 4th International Workshop Structures in Fire - SiF'06 was held
from 10th to 12th May 2006, in the University of Aveiro. It was organized
by the Department of Civil Engineering under the auspice of the SiF
- International Movement Structures in Fire.
A total of 134 delegates from 24 countries attended the Workshop, distributed
by the following countries: Australia (3), Austria (2), Belgium (3),
Brazil (5), Canada (3), China (3), Czech Republic (2), Finland (2),
France (8), Germany (6), Iceland (1), Italy (4), Japan (4), Lithuania
(1), Luxembourg (2), New Zealand (3), Portugal (19), Singapore (1),
Spain (3), Sweden (6), Switzerland (2), The Netherlands (2), United
States of America (13) and United Kingdom (36).
Papers were accepted on the basis of their quality and originality. Answering to the call-for-papers, 133 abstracts were received, from which 111 were selected by the Scientific Committee for possible presentation at the Workshop. These abstracts led to 91 technical papers published in the proceedings and were grouped in the following topics:
" Steel, Stainless Steel and Aluminium Structural Members (25
papers)
" Steel Connections (6 papers)
" Composite Structures (8 papers)
" Structural Behaviour (13 papers)
" Concrete Structures (21 papers)
" Timber Structures(9 papers)

Most of the papers were on the field of Steel and Composite structures.
The Proceedings of the Workshop was edited by Paulo Vila Real (University
of Aveiro), Jean-Marc Franssen (University of Liege) and Nuno Lopes
(University of Aveiro), ISBN 972-789-190-X, and copies may be obtained

At the 4th Workshop, it was decided that the responsibility to lead
the SiF Movement in the future will be shared by four members of the
steering committee that has been formed, namely Prof. Jean-Marc Franssen,
Prof. Andy Buchanan, Prof. Venkatesh Kodur and Prof. Paulo Vila Real.
The Institute of Metal Constructions organised in June 2005 the 7th
Slovenian Steel Construction Days. During this event, projects were
presented for the Award of the Best Steel Structure in Slovenia. They
all proved that steel remains the most suitable material for buildings
combining versatility and functionality, which gives free way to the
imagination.
The Award was presented to the project "Multicinema TU",
in Novo Mesto. The main features of this project are the two floating
halls that hang on the steel structure above the free ground floor of
the entering foyer. The project was designed by the project planning
company ELEA iC d.o.o. and manufactured and assembled by Trimo d.d.
The architect was Janez Koelj, professor at the Faculty of Architecture
in Ljubljana. Several interesting nominated projects were presented,
among them was the new steel "Cerkvenik" Bridge, in kocjanske
jame, and the steel canopies of the international border crossing Obreje,
between Slovenia and Croatia.
Besides the presentation of the Award, two professional lectures were
delivered. They were devoted to the rules of mechanical resistance,
stability of buildings, and the presentation of standard OSIST prEN
1090:2004 Steel and Aluminium structural components.
The best papers (4 scientific papers and 4 technical papers) of SSCS 2010, selected by the following board of editors will be published at the September issue of Steel Construction Design and Research.
Board of editors for this special issue consists of Prof. Nesrin YARDIMCI, Prof. Harun BATIRBAYGIL, Prof. Luis da SILVA, Prof. Milan VELJKOVIC and Prof. Cavidan YORGUN.
Although 110 abstracts have been submitted to the symposium, considering the importance of the above mentioned attracting news for participants, organisers of the international symposium Steel Structures: Culture & Sustainability 2010 have decided to grant a final extension for deadline of abstract submissions for all Authors who are still interested in contributing a paper to the Symposium. If you have not yet submitted an abstract, you are urged to do so as soon as possible, and by the new deadline of 18 January 2010 at the latest.

TUCSA is organising the "PROSteel-2006" International Steel Design Competition for Students under the auspices of ECCS. TUCSA has been organising regularly steel design competitions for students every year since 2000 together with Istanbul Technical University (ITU) or Borusan Mannesman Boru Inc, the main supporter of PROSteel.
The main objectives of this competition are:
to encourage architecture and engineering students to work together
within joint teams;
to introduce the advantages of steel to the large number of students;
to develop European identity and mutual understanding among European
students;
to increase their international experiences;
to exchange knowledge and culture among different countries and
education systems;
to encourage the individual participants to establish multinational
combine teams besides single nation teams.
The winners will be awarded the following prizes:
- 1st Degree prize € 3.000,-
- 2nd Degree Prize € 2.000,-
- 3rd Degree Prize € 1.250,-
- Special Prize by Borusan € 2.500,- (*)
- Combine team special prize € 1.000,- (*)
(*) may be received together with a degree prize
Entries have to be sent not later than 20 January 2006. The Award Ceremony and Exhibition will take place late April 2006.

Further to the Annual Meetings held in Nice, France, on 22-23 September
2005, the Members appointed Prof. Dan Dubina (Romania) as the ECCS President,
and Mr J.B. Schleich (Luxembourg) as Vice President for the year 2005-2006:
The Chairman of the Technical Meeting for 2006 will be Prof. Gerhard
Sedlacek (DE), and Bertrand Lemoine will chair the Market Development
and Promotion Session.
It is with great sadness that the SCMF regrets to announce that Mr.
Jean Roret passed away in Nice, on 09 August 2005, at the age of 80.
He was past Deputy President and treasurer of SCMF.
Mr Roret chaired during various years the "Commission Promotion",
and represented the French Steel Constructional industry in various
French and international bodies, among them the ECCS.
Drees Brunt, who was Director SNS, notified his resignation to the board due to a change of position. His successor has not yet been appointed.
Further to its AGM held on 14 July 2005, BCSA made new appointments for the forthcoming year. Donald McCormack, Managing Director of Terence McCormack Ltd, based in Newry, Co down, was elected President, and Richard Barrett, Managing Director of Barrett Steel Buildings Ltd., based in Bradford, West Yorkshire, was elected Deputy President.
This year, the laureate is Professor Giulio Ballio Rector of the University of Milano, Politecnico di Milano, in Italy, whose application has been entered by the Italian National Association for Constructional Steelwork, Associazione Fra I Costruttori in Acciaio Italiani (ACAI). Professor Ballio has been selected for this Award in recognition of the quality and importance of the work he has carried out as prominent scientist and researcher.
Professor G. Sedlacek has been appointed Chairman of the TMB by the
Annual General Meeting of September 2004. He is keen on Eurocodes, and
would like to make it a challenge for the future works of the TMB, especially
in view of its implementation due in 2005.
Indeed, he is one of the most active people in the European steel construction
research as well as in the European codification field. He plays an
outstanding role in the international development and establishing of
the Eurocodes or steel structures.
Professor Sedlacek served in the ECCS Technical Committees: TC 1- Safety
& Actions, TC 6
Fatigue & Fracture, TC 10 Connections, TC 13- Seismic for
a long time
