The summer 2006 was marked by spectacular operations brilliantly carried
out: the lifting and the laying of the "butterflies" and of
the decks, signalling the birth of the highest vertical lift bridge in
Europe and even in the world.
Journey on the Rhine, the North Sea and the Seine of 450 tons of steel
of the "butterfly" then of 1 300 tons of the deck made by Eiffel
Lauterbourg and constituting the largest parcel ever transported.
On August the 16th and 17th 2006, lifting and laying of the "butterflies"
at the top of the pylons carried out from 5 to 6:20 am.
These original structures of tubular steel in the shape of butterfly wings
will allow the implementation of lifting mechanisms developed by Eiffel.
Taklift 7, the Dutch floating derrick with a capacity of 1 200 tons and
a 130 meter high jib, delicately lifted then laid on the pylons at a height
of 74 meters, each butterfly 17 meters in height and 30 meters in width.
Their high point culminates now at 91 meters and 67 meters above water.
For the second major stage of lifting-assembly of the 1 300 ton decks,
two floating derricks, Taklift 7 and Matador 3 of 1 500 tons were essential.
They coordinated their operations to lift and lay to within about 4 millimetres,
each deck, a kind of 120 meter long, 17 meter broad and 4,5 meter high
aerodynamic aircraft carrier, on the bases of the pylons: from 7 to 11
am on August 21; from 7 to 11:45 am on August 22.
September and October are dedicated to the installation of the cables.
The first tests of the lifting system at the end of 2006 and the beginning
of 2007.
