"Steel Construction - Global Challenges for 2050"

European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS / CECM / EKS) Congress will handle important steel construction issues being faced around the globe. The ECCS Annual Meetings will also be held in the same location on September 23, 2011.

European steel construction associations, supporting the events as a whole, have united to jointly tackle Europe-wide activities and to coordinate such efforts under the umbrella of the ECCS. The organizer of all events is the German Steel Construction Association (DSTV) together with bauforumstahl.

The ECCS Congress 2011 will place special focus on future developments in our cities. Across 3 presentation sessions renown international architects, planners and engineers will address issues surrounding:

  • Safety & Risk – Seismic Design
  • Metropolis – Future European and Urban Infrastructures
  • Structural Steel – Building the Future

These important topics create the opportunity to address pressing issues for architects, structural engineers, designers, steel fabricators and builders giving way to a new European vision for a better and sustainable future.

A special highlight on the second day will be the biannual ECCS European Structural Steel Design Awards.

European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS)

The Istanbul Declaration "Steel, culture and sustainability"

  1. Iron and steel has been involved in our lives for 3000 years: in household goods, machines, delivery of water and power, transportation, shelter for people and goods; they are a unique and essential material of our existence.
  2. Iron is present everywhere on the global surface; even the core of earth is in iron; it is one of the ever abundant natural resource on earth.
  3. Steel provides construction with a unique combination of design flexibility, strength, durability and performances; it is used in every type of construction: reinforced concrete, timber, and of course steel structures.
  4. Steel construction offers a long service life while allowing easy adaptation to the evolving requirements of the end-user. It facilitates refurbishment, transformation and adaptation of old buildings to new uses.
  5. Steel is 100% recyclable and offers the distinctive ability to be “up-cycled”; it is the sustainable material of the future; steel structures in Europe are made by up to 96 % of recycled steel. Steel is reusable at the level not possible to reach by any other construction materials.
  6. Cutting energy, reducing raw material and lowering CO2 emissions for every ton of steel produced and fabricated is in full compliance with the European Community targets on Sustainability.
  7. Steel offers a safe working environment and enhances the quality of employee training; it combines low tech abilities and high tech capabilities. It is the most suitable material for simple, strong and fast construction.
  8. Steel offers solutions for sustainable construction; thus educating and training skilled professionals familiar with steel construction is crucial to sustainable development.
  9. Steel is a global constructional material of international importance. Research and dissemination of information that optimizes the opportunities for steel in construction is a key issue in the success of the steel supply chain; Europe has a unique responsibility to share with the world its knowledge and capability.
  10. Human development, education, sharing of culture, research and dissemination of information are issues in which the proper use of steel can play a major role.
  11. Culture and sustainability work together for the benefit of our environment; building with steel is one of the most sustainable routes to the future.

As a European body representing the industry which delivers constructional steel to the customers and the people, ECCS is focusing its activities at four key issues:

  • Implication in the European policy and organization to push on sustainable solutions for construction is the way to guarantee the future of a good management of resources.
  • Energy and resources saving, intelligent use of materials in construction, adaptation to social needs, fulfillment of the society ambitions are issues in which steel as a construction material can play a major role for sustainable development.
  • Educating and training young people in order to give them the ability to build the future is a major issue in European objectives by increasing their competence in using steel as a construction material.
  • The sharing of European skills and expertise is a way of achieving future prosperity, and the sharing of our knowledge with the world in mastering complex tasks will lead to a better future.
In this declaration, the ECCS representing the industry of constructional steelwork of European countries, states its ambition to bring together the European Community and shares a responsibility for a sustainable steel construction supply chain. The ECCS’ aim is to express with a single voice its concerns for the future of a sustainable planet.
