ECCS Awards for steel bridges 2008

The European Convention for Constructional Steelwork organized the 1st ECCS Award For Steel Bridges in 2008.
The objective is to give European recognition to outstanding steel and composite bridges emphasizing the many advantages of steel in construction, production, economy and architecture.
The Awards are opened to steel and composite bridges which steel structures were fabricated in the ECCS full members’ countries. The construction must have been completed and be ready for use within the last three years.
Bridges, footbridges and renovation projects (major retrofit, expansion or rehabilitation) are eligible.
The panel of judges comprised the following representatives of Architecture and Civil Engineering: Bertrand Lemoine; Joël Raoul; Julio Martínez Calzón; Luis Simões da Silva; Paulo J. S. Cruz and René Maquoi.
All applications were assessed against the following criteria:
. to be of an internationally recognised standard;
. to be outstanding in its construction;
. to emphasize the advantages of steel in construction, production, economy and architecture;
. to disseminate the knowledge of steel, its many uses, and to draw attention to its development;
. to improve the image of steel;
. to interest clients, architects and engineers in using more steel within the entire building sector, thereby making the steel industry competitive.

Jury's comments: This unique mobile bridge, composed of two moving decks, combines high performance steel construction, sophistication in the mechanical devices and original method of erection. It demonstrates the versatility of steel to bring forward solutions in an urban context and to create a new landmark.

Jury's comments: This renovation of an outstanding historical bridge, built in the end of the 19th century by Theophile Seyrig, Eiffel's former associate, is distinguished for the very careful attention taken to the old riveted structures, which integrity has been maintained, and the use of modern technology to strengthen and bring this bridge to a new life.

Jury's comments: This striking cable stayed bridge offers a dynamic and refreshing architectural statement, with a subtle technical response, combining a vehicle and a pedestrian deck.

Jury's comments: Although simple in overall design, this long viaduct avoids monotony by using a twin deck and V shaped supports, which fits properly in the landscape of the valley.

Jury's comments: Using weathering steel, this very long viaduct stretches as a straightforward gently curved segment over this Spanish valley to meet the stringe requirements of a high speed railway line.

Jury's comments: The graceful integration of a composite deck with a tubular truss structure combined with slender vertical supports is achieved through well executed connections which gives a light visual appearance to the viaduct.

Jury's comments: The slenderness, elegance and carefully designed details of this quite large footbridge spanning a river between three countries perfectly illustrate the raison d'être of a bridge: to link people. The steel construction demonstrates the capabilities of steel both in term of technical performance and architectural signification.

Jury's comments: In the heart of the city of Drammen, this asymmetric bridge with a central double pylon provides a new monument to the city while fulfilling the many requirements of such a location.
